The history of how Reuge Music first began manufacturing exquisite musical time pieces, music boxes, and musical time pieces began with its founder, Charles Reuge in 1865. Reuge was originally a watchmaker from the Val-de-Travers, Switzerland. In 1865 he moved to Sainte-Croix and begins making unique and sought after pocket watches with musical movements, and opened a music box “counter” about a year later. In other words, he went from just having a basic workshop to opening a retail store. At about the same time, however in 1877, Thomas Edison invented the phonograph, which had somewhat of a negative impact on the whole music box making industry, especially as it became perfected and merchandised for mass distribution. However, despite Edison’s invention, and the forthcoming invention of radio, television, tape players, and digital music players, music boxes remain in demand, while the phonograph is antiquated.

Did Mozart listen to his physician when advised to slow down? We at Reuge Music have done some research and it seems that he may have died from a sore throat. When Mozart died at the age of 35 on December 5, 1791, the true cause of his death was never determined. There were numerous and often romanticized speculations that he died from living a life of overindulgence in alcohol, food, women, and ultimately succumbed to exhaustion. This is clearly the case as portrayed in the dramatized narrative of composer Salieri in the 1984 film, “Amadeus.” Scholars in the past have contemplated numerous and certainly more plausible theories of the young composer’s death including suspicions of poisoning, rheumatic fever, Scarlet fever, tuberculosis, renal failure, Henoch–Schönlein purpura, trichinosis, or severe edema.
